Beryl arrived a little earlier than predicted – imagine that – and George woke up to find our dinghy heading down the river. Oops. He launched my SOT kayak, I handed him a life jacket, and he paddled after it.
Yesterday, I rode my bike to Carolina State Park and spent several glorious hours harassing crabs and searching for carnivorous plants. Venus Fly Traps are so cool. I’ve never seen one in person before today, and I looked around for something to feed it, but couldn’t find any insects (that’s all they eat) close by.
I love searching online to find what one thing an area is famous for, and in Carolina Beach, it’s donuts. Britt’s Donut Shop, to be exact. They’ve been a local landmark since 1939, and the recipe hasn’t changed in 73 years. 130 five star reviews can’t all be biased, so I ended my 15+ years of donut abstinence, although it’s probably been more like 20 years since I’ve had one. The last donut I remember eating was after church service on “Donut Sunday”, as the first Sunday of every month was called. (I usually ate 3 or 4 donuts on these holiest of holy Sundays until a “Limit 1″ rule was enacted. I may have been to blame for that.)
Anyway…I ate one of Britt’s hot, glazed, melt-in-your-mouth donuts and immediately got back in line and bought 6 more. So that means I ate 7. In an hour. George chose gelato instead. Whatever…although he didn’t have stomach cramps all day yesterday either.
And in other news, George has signed up for his first paragliding class this summer. This will be him one day SOON! I will be taking pictures from the ground, so I’m in the market for a really high power zoom lens.
By the way, we have a Facebook page that’s fun and a lot more interactive than the blog. If you have a facebook account, you can find us here: https://www.facebook.com/sailmarquesa (I know it’s our old blog name; I wasn’t able to change that) or just do a facebook search for “TheFurtherWeGo”.
